Living in Marbella: which neighbourhood suits which family?

Marbella is not one town but several worlds side by side: one by the sea and lively, one on the hillside and quiet, one among the golf courses. Here are the neighbourhoods the way we introduce them to our own clients.

Marbella neighbourhoods: aerial view of the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús
In short
  • If international schools and family life matter, look at Nueva Andalucía and around Guadalmina.
  • For privacy and views, Sierra Blanca and Benahavís; for walking to town and beach, the Golden Mile.
  • Estepona suits anyone who wants more space for a more reasonable budget.

Golden Mile

The coastal strip between Marbella town and Puerto Banús. The best-known and most expensive address in town: beachfront villas, long-established hotels, and everything a short walk or drive away. It suits people who want it all close by and for whom the address itself matters.

Sierra Blanca

Just above the Golden Mile on the mountainside. A gated community with security, quiet streets and sea-view villas. Minutes from the centre, yet it feels removed and calm. Families who put security and privacy first tend to fall for it.

Nueva Andalucía

Known as the “Golf Valley”: Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and Aloha are all here. It is full of international families, has an international school, and restaurants and shops are close at hand. If you have school-age children, this is usually our first suggestion.

Puerto Banús

The marina, superyachts, designer shops and busy nights. Attractive for investment apartments and short-term lets, but for a quiet year-round family life we usually suggest the neighbourhoods around it.

Benahavís

A few kilometres inland among the mountains. La Zagaleta, one of Europe’s most private estates, is here. Large plots, nature, golf and silence. For those escaping the bustle who do not mind a few minutes’ drive to the beach.

East Marbella

Los Monteros, Elviria and their surroundings. Quieter beaches, more greenery and a more local way of life. For retirees and families who want Marbella without the summer crowds.

Estepona

A little further west, an old town of flower-lined streets that has grown a great deal in recent years. The same budget usually buys a larger home than in Marbella, and there are many new-build projects.

The best way to choose is to see them up close. On a viewing trip we walk the neighbourhoods together at different times of day, so you get a real feel for each one.
