Requirements

What you will need

  1. Financial means

The law requires 400% of the IPREM index. In 2026 that is about €2,400 a month or €28,800 a year for the main applicant, plus about €600 a month for each family member.

  2. A clear source of income

Bank balances, deposits, pensions, rental income or investment returns all count. Income from work in Spain does not.

  3. Private health insurance

Full cover in Spain from an insurer operating there.

  4. An address in Spain

A title deed or rental contract. If you have bought a home, the deed becomes part of the file.

  5. Criminal record and medical certificate

    Both translated and legalised.

Figures are based on official 2026 indices and change slightly each year. We calculate the exact amount for your case before you apply.

Questions

What people often ask

Can I work remotely on this permit?

The permit does not authorise work. If your income comes from work, start with the digital nomad visa instead.

How long is the permit?

The first permit lasts one year and is renewed as long as you meet the conditions. After five years of legal residence you can apply for long-term residence.

Must the money be in a Spanish bank?

Not necessarily; foreign accounts are accepted if the source and history are clear. We tell you exactly how to present it.

Does buying a home help?

Yes. It becomes your Spanish address, and if you let it, the rent counts towards your income.
