This route is for you if…

  • You have worked for a foreign employer or clients for at least three months
  • You hold a degree or at least three years of relevant experience
  • Your income is provable: payslips, contracts, invoices
  • Most of your income comes from outside Spain

Requirements

What you will need

  1. Income

    Around 200% of the Spanish minimum wage, about €2,850 a month in 2026. Add roughly €915 for the first family member and €305 for each additional one.

  2. Working relationship

    At least three months with your employer or clients, and the employer must have been trading for at least a year.

  3. Degree or experience

    A relevant university degree or at least three years of professional experience.

  4. Share of Spanish clients

    As a freelancer, no more than 20% of your income may come from Spanish clients.

  5. Insurance and criminal record

    Full health cover and a clean criminal record certificate.

What people often ask

Does it work for freelancers?

Yes, provided you have contracts and regular invoices and most of your income comes from outside Spain.

Gross or net income?

Gross. What matters is that contracts, payslips and statements tell the same story.

What happens after a few years?

The permit is renewed, and after five years of legal residence you can apply for long-term residence.

What about tax?

Once you are tax resident in Spain you pay tax there. There are special regimes for newcomers that we review with our tax adviser.
